What’s in My Hospital Birth Bag: A Mama’s Guide to Packing for the Big Day

Are you almost due, mama? I’ve got you covered. At 38 weeks pregnant, I can tell you—packing your hospital bag earlier rather than later is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. I recommend starting by at least 37 weeks.

Why? Because every day after that, you may feel a little more tired, a little more overwhelmed, and a little more focused on a hundred other “last-minute” things before baby arrives.

And here’s the truth—at 38 weeks, your little bundle could decide it’s time any day now!

Why Pack Your Birth Bag Early

Having your bag ready takes one big stressor off your plate. When it’s go-time, you won’t be scrambling for your phone charger or wondering where your comfy socks went.

This checklist is here to help you decide what’s essential and what’s “nice to have” for a smoother, more comfortable hospital experience. And if you do forget something? Don’t sweat it, mama—you’ll have plenty of help, resources, and support to fill in the gaps on D-day.

A Word of Wisdom: Less is More

It’s tempting to pack for every possible scenario, but overpacking can lead to clutter and frustration. The last thing you want is to be digging through piles of stuff when you’re sore, tired, or trying to soak in your first hours with baby. Pack smart, keep it simple, and focus on comfort.

    My Hospital Bag Essentials

    • ID, forms, insurance card, pocket money, and birth plan
Tip: Many hospitals let you pre-register so your info is already in the system—one less thing to juggle.
    • Phone charger & electronics
Long cords are a lifesaver for hard-to-reach outlets.
    • Nursing bras (wireless) – 1–2
    • Nursing padsLanolin/nipple cream
    • Disposable undies or mesh underwear
Most hospitals will provide these, but having extras for home is always helpful.
    • Travel-size toiletries – shampoo/dry shampoo, conditioner, body wash, face cleanser, moisturizer, toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash.
    • 100% shea butter – Doubles as a safe, all-purpose moisturizer for you and baby.
    • No-slip cozy socks
    • Glasses or contacts supplies
    • Quick makeup pick-me-ups – BB cream, concealer, mascara, lip stain. (Perfect for those first photos!)
    • Perineal care – “Mom Washer” by Frida Baby, witch hazel, and hemorrhoid cream if needed.
    • Nursing tank tops & a relaxed nursing hoodie
Perfect for easy feeding and skin-to-skin while staying comfy and covered.
    • Loose clothing – Tie-waist sweatpants or a roomy nightgown.
    • Soft towel
    • Robe

    Optional Comforts

    • Music or playlists
    • Book or e-reader
    • Aromatherapy oils
    • Snacks
    • Your own pillow (with a bright pillowcase so it doesn’t get mixed up!)

    Don’t Forget for Baby

    • Car seat (installed ahead of time)
    • Going-home outfit

    Partner’s Mini Bag

One overnight change of clothes, toiletries, and maybe snacks—they’ll thank you later.

    Packing Tips

    • Use inexpensive or reusable bags—you don’t need a fancy “hospital bag.”
    • Bring a spare tote to carry home hospital goodies (yes, stock up on those mesh undies and pads!).
    • Use large ziplock bags for toiletries, baby clothes, and snacks to keep everything organized and easy to see.

Mama, you’ve got this. Your body was made for this moment. And no matter what you pack—or forget—the only thing you truly need is that sweet little love bug. Everything else is just bonus.

Share this checklist with a mama-to-be you love!
